Unwind by Neal Shusterman

A second civil war has been fought in the future- and this time over abortion. Things got so heated between the pro-life and pro-choice that a reluctant compromise was made. Parents could decide to have their kids “unwound” at age 13; kids would technically still be “alive” because their parts would be used in other people – fingers, toes, heart, kidney, arm, etc.

However, kids are also aware this decision is being made as they are shipped off to Harvest Camp, so some try to escape. Connor’s being unwound because his parents can’t control him and don’t want to try anymore. Risa’s an orphan and budget cuts means only the most talented kids can live, and Lev’s ultra-religious parents raised him to be a tithe. When these three kids unexpectedly end up on the run together, quite an adventure happens! I highly recommend it. Girls and guys will like this book because it’s fast-paced, unusual, and interesting.
